This is my first gold coin, an 1899 Half eagle. It was a gift, so the price was perfect, what would you grade it?

    I'd say MS63.

I'm not completely opposed to that. One thing that I noticed was that when i removed it from the plastic flip it was in to photograph it is was surprisingly heavy, lol. I knew (Intellectually) that gold is more dense than copper or silver, but I was surprised by how solid it felt.

    Nice coin Cave Troll!!
Gold is very hard for me to grade from a picture, so I must agree with GD it is in MS condition.
Congratulations on your first gold coin.

    BTW, really good pic's

I'd say it should fetch MS-64.

I would agree that it's an MS63. And NO, I did not look at what GD gave it first! ;)

Oh, and yes, the weight of gold... ahhhh... It just feels good in the hand.

From what I can see, that coin's almost certainly uncirculated, so I concur with the rest of the group. Putting a number to it is beyond me, though. Gold being as soft as it is I know there's an extra allowance for bag marks, but that coin has a ton of 'em. I'd say it's lower in the range, almost certainly no higher than a 63.

That aside, it's a beautiful piece. Congratulations.

As for the grade, I think it is a 2/3 liner, and would need to see it in hand to say further.

Nice coin..I would have to agree with Doug on the MS63..depending on how it looks under the glass the contact marks are not so bad..worst case I would say a MS62..but hey submit it and add on to it.

The job is wonderful. I am 10x (by no means a scientific measurement) better at grading now than I was 3 months ago. It's amazing what looking at thousands upon thousands of coins and studying a lot can do. I don't have any particularly interesting stories, except that I have seen some absolutely stunning coins. :) :D :D

I would put it at MS62, and that's before reading all the comments!
