Looking at an auction. Bidding is at $160, I'm thinking of jumping in. Anyone know a bidding range? Or if I should even jump in. Any insight would be appreciated.
Save your money.... while low mintage, the 99-P enjoys a high survival rate and therefore can be obtained with relative ease in no-problem conditions and higher grades for comparatively small premiums above lesser examples.
Polished was my first thought, but then I thought it looks that way do the the coin angle and the white balance on the camera. I think the coin is tilted this way and the white balance set to hide a lot of stuff on this coin. He/she couldn't hide it all as you can still see major contact marks on the devices, impaired fields and what looks to be some hairlines from cleaning. I hope you passed on this coin.
Definitely high survival, despite the 330,000 mintage. It is estimated that 100,000+ survived, and that one is NOT a nice example--it has been harshly cleaned based on the photograph provided. I'd pass on the coin at any price.
The 99 is one of my all time favorite Morgans. The one you were wanting to bid on is pure junk. This is my 99. You can find them with nice strikes. It will just require a little bit of looking.
