I've never done a "guess the grade" before, but seeing this is one that I am just not sure of. Any thoughts on grade would be greatly appreciated.
I'm still trying to learn the grades myself so this is my exercise. So with that, if you could briefly explain why you came up with the grade you did. Thanks!

I'll go MS-64. A pretty clean coin, but the stain on the reverse hurts it a bit. 65 without the stain on most days.

Thanks Kirkuleez. I had no idea a stain could bring a coin back an entire grade.

I'd say 64 due to stain and that mark above the eagle; very distracting. Still a beautiful coin.

It may or may not, but eye appeal is certainly one of the main things to consider while grading a coin. This is why so many wild rainbow coins are graded well beyond their technical grade.

Easy gem in my book. Looks like a little cud on the eyelid.

Id say 64 as well. Fields on the obverse look fairly clean but there are some distracting marks on the cheek. Also with the staining on the back and the contact marks above the eagle. Could go 65 but I dont like the appeal for a 65.

I'm at 63. Not a ton of marks, but what marks are visible are quite distracting.

From the photo, wonderful luster, but the stain and mark above the eagle and on the jaw detract. MS 64

I think PCGS gave it a 64, but it is very close to a 65.

At first look, I thought I was looking at an AU coin, as some of the detail in the lady's hair (directly above ear) seemed to have lost a bit of detail. In all other respects, i thought i was looking at a solid 4.

I googled for images of 65 grade 1899-P Morgans, and all of them showed the same "wear." That would be a die issue, or a strike issue.

    Nice coin!

So here it is, most all of you were correct. Thanks for the explanations, I did learn a bit.
Do you think I could get NGC to bump it up a grade? ;)

Look at this 1884-CC, and look at the extra detail in the hair above the ear. pm1177a-1884CC-PCGS-MS65-DOLLAR.jpg . but a better strike
