Wondering what folks think about this 1898 Morgan, being offered for $33. I'm still learning about these things, but my sense is that it's been dipped to death. Or maybe it's the photo? I might be interested if it actually doesn't have this problem (or some other dealbreaker).
Based upon the photos it has that AU-ish look. Is such a coin worth $33 to you? Unless there is additional photos or other pertinent information you've not shared here, I personally see no need for the link. Although it appears you've been a member here for nearly nine years, if you're not confident in your abilities and/or comfortable buying raw, there are other options including finding a knowledgeable and trustworthy dealer willing to work with you. Best of luck with whatever you decide.
I was looking for a link to check out the seller and see if they have negative feedback from selling 'bad coins' if this is on eBay, which I am guessing it probably is...
Yes, it is on eBay. The seller has 100% positive feedback; not seeing any signs of concerns about bad coins. I largely put the hobby aside around 2012, and have only gotten back into it in the last 18 months. I was never a frequent poster. I generally feel comfortable buying raw, but occasionally I see coins that I like, but have some reservation about. I usually expect to pay more for the Morgans I want, so I thought I'd post here for a couple of other opinions.
That's completely your call, but now I'm curious as to why you think or suspect the seller will have negative feedback? My response was based solely upon what the OP provided as well as respecting his decision to provide what he felt necessary. Nothing less or more.
Discountcoin is the seller. This coin would be for my Dansco Morgan Date Set album. My plan was to fill it with coins in the MS-60-61 range (except 1893 and '95, which are going to have to be in much lower grades), and let them develop some toning. The first couple of coins I put in it around 2011 have fit this pattern, but I got sidetracked by some financial issues that kept me away from my collection until early '17. So now I'm still figuring out whether to resume my original idea for the set or do something else. Separately I'll be getting a couple of slabbed key dates, but that'll be a while...
Fair enough and thanks for the details. My greater point was that each of us has to decide what a coin (or anything else) is worth to us personally. That said and again based upon the provided info, you're looking at an AU (likely Ch) example of a fairly common coin priced at about 3x melt. Have you compared to or tried to locate any slabbed examples in the same range? If unsure about the price this may be a good starting point. I found the listing and see the seller was honest in his short description. The photos may not be of the highest quality, but are wholly acceptable for something like this. Although not familiar with the guy, nothing in this listing strikes me as a red flag, plus he's 30 day returns. I guess my point here is that if you like it, if it's worth the price of admission to you, and if you'll get $33 worth of enjoyment out of it, why not? Price is a big deal, I understand, but it's not everything....
