1897-S Morgan. Lamination or strikethrough or??

    I'm being told it's a lamination on the obverse but it looks more like a strike through. It could even be PMD to go along with the verdigris and other foreign material that would easily come off in an acetone dip.

    The price on this is very reasonable but before I say yes, I want to get others opinions on what they think the damage is caused from.

    It's hard for me to say. But I would lean towards a detached lamination.

    physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

    It looks like a minor lamination. Unless a lamination is significant, it will actually often reduce the eye appeal, and thus the grade and value. Combined with the ugly spot on the reverse and the streaking on both sides (which I don't think will come off with acetone), I'd pass on this coin unless there is a really strong reason you want it. Laminations are common - if you're buying it for the minor defect, wait for one with a significant lamination.

    Yeah looks like either a detached lamination or detached wood strikethrough. Pmd appears unlikely but with these pics only one way to find out. Either way though it's a small error that wouldn't garner much of a premium

    No real way to be sure from images this small; I lean towards a strikethrough. This small, I'd call it a detraction from value rather than an addition.

    I'm going for this AU coin for the error.

    Neat. Just be sure to inspect that area with a loupe once you have it in hand.

    Might be ground?

    Looks ok but bad pic and only those two devices are affected with no surrounding area seemingly so just something to look at closer when you get it in hand. Imagine if you can find the mated coin with the dropped element(s) if it happened and it's out there.

    @Cascade
    Here's a better photo. The green should come off with acetone, right?

    Much better. Looks good and the green looks like placrisizer which should come off in acetone. Hopefully with no underlying damage. Also says it's been in a pvc flip for a while

    I know that feeling, but in my case it was 7¢.
