Here a 1897-S is the mint mark inverted??? It looks like it to me. just need some opinions or better eye's to look at than my old worn out eyes
I can't say with any certainty , but it is definitely a curious MM and perhaps worthwhile submitting for possible error verification .
This looks like an RPM although www.VamWorld.com do not make any direct reference to it. If my photo is correct and my eyes are not deceiving me there is a small section of the serif displayed at the top of the S to the Left as well as what appears to be a doubled line along the middle of the S. You may want to send this to the people at the webaddress listed you may have a VAM that is not listed.
Here's the pics from VAMworld of the S tilted right, mint marks look the same to me, only the S isn't tilted right. VAMworld - 1897-S Reverses
IMO, the S is not inverted. it does appear to have been placed onto the die at an angle. However, check out cherrypickers for the 1909 S Barber Half Dollar inverted MM. [which I discovered]. As you may be able to see, the easiest way to see if it is inverted is to flip the S over. [invert the coin] If it looks 'more' normal looking at it upside down then there is a chance, a small one, but still a chance.
Hi, To make it simple, the S has a serif on top and a "trumpet" tail on the bottom. Normal on this coin and Not inverted. Thanks, Bill
