    Good Day

A friend showed me an 1896-S Morgan Dollar that has unusual rim detailing. It does not look like other Morgans. Both obverse and reverse rims look heavy or "blocked." I looked online and could not find any particular varieties or oddities listed for this particular issue.

The edge reeding is still intact, so I don't believe the coin has been shaved or altered.

    I've attached photos.

What do you make of this? Any thoughts?

    Kind Regards
    Ray

I think it is the result of someone possessing a file and a Morgan, and wondering 'what can I do with these?'.

Please wait for Rascal's respected opinion before relegating this to the junk pile, though.

Ok then if we need rascal's opinion to make it offical then put it in the books as PMD. someone was probably useing this coin on a belt buckle and wanted it to look better. Look on the bright side , it still has some silver melt value.

CoinTalk has spoken! So let it be written, so let it be done. Thanks all for your input.

I think the belt-buckle or other decorative alteration makes sense.
