Hello all - I just found this coin today, and wanted to get opinions on it (I hope you can see it - I tried to follow the posting instructions for attachments). I looked it up on the coin website and found it to be worth something passable, but wanted to see what you thought. Thank you for your time! Kristen Scott
I was cleaning out some old moving boxes in the house. It's funny what you find when you do that! I am not familiar with grading, but I know that this coin may have some value for collectors. I am realistic, though.
Howdy Kristen - Welcome to the Forum !! This one is kind of a tough call. I can't tell based on the pics how much detail there is left in the head band of the obverse - in particular the word Liberty. Typically you need to be able to see all the letters to achieve a certain grade. But in the pics I can't make any of them. But if you can get better pics - I can be of more hlep. If the letters are gone due to wear or damage then the coin would be net graded. It also appears as if there may be some scratches as well - this also detracts from the value. But as long as the coin is genuine, even in its present condition I would think you could get $75 for it fairly readily.
Here is a detailed shot. There is a bit of the word left - hadn't seen it before! Thanks for the "heads up".
Think I'd send the coin to ANACS - they'll grade and slab it for you. If you did - you might get $125 out of it
I prefer to call it schlabbing, but that's because I'm not a coin guy. Here's a picture of a slabbed coin (this particular one is in an ANACS holder, however there are different companies that certify and grade coins -thus different holders). Basically you're paying them to encase it, authenticate it, catalog it, and give it a grade (opinion of condition). People often pay more for a slabbed coin than a non-slabbed coin, even if the condition is the same. Go figure.
Oh that is priceless !! According to many more people than you can ever believe - you don't know how true that statement is ! Slabbing is when you send a coin to an independent 3rd party company that will authenticate & grade the coin for you. They then place the coin in a tamper proof holder called a slab, with the grade and a serial number printed on it. Slabs from respectable companies make it easy to sell your coins because of the trust that collectors have in the company. You can read more about it by Clicking Here
So do you think this coin is worth getting slabbed? Do these companies charge for this service? Thank you, by the way, for sharing this information with me!
That's cute. As I said, I'm not a coin guy, but if they didn't charge for the service, everyone would be dropping off boxes, bags, trucks of coins to be graded. :: Kristen thinks... hmmm, he's got a point there :: Pricing varies from company to company, and sometimes how fast (or slow as I;ve been reading) you want it done.
Not to be a bubble popper here, but I'm wondering if the coins been whizzed (mechanically cleaned). Hard to tell from the pictures. GDJMSP you've usually got an eye for that sort of thing. What do you think? Either way, fun find Kristen. Thanks for sharing and welcome to the forum!
No I don't think it's been whizzed or harshly cleaned at all - it's just seen some rough handling and circulation in my opinion. Yes Kristen I would get it slabbed I think. Click on the link I gave you - you'll see how much it cost
