So I tried to match this up with photograde and based on the hairlines below the crown and the eye I am coming up with this Morgan being a VG8. I noticed they are selling on fleebay for a little over $200. My question is how much would those initials on the obverse pull this coin down? What can I expect?
It will make it a "details" coin for anyone who takes more than a cursory glance. EBay is unpredictable, but I'd prepare myself for the worst. I'd predict it would take a big hit down from $200.
Rare date but the damage really hurts the value. No way to guess what it will bring. I'll bet it would bring a different price, every time it is auctioned.
From what I read in past threads here the best thing to do is be honest and include it in the title and description. This is one of those live and learn situations for me. I should have looked closer.
Any of the TPGs will grade it "Details / Graffiti". You can search for coins using that to get some idea...
I like the replies you are getting... and answer you gave in post #5. I think you're right. Be honest and hope for the best. Maybe you'll find a buyer like me who is willing to sacrifice a bit on the grade (and damage) to bring the price down. Best wishes.
If I had to guess, I'd say that the discount won't be that large. The initials don't stand out that much on a coin in this state, and anyone trying to complete a Morgan date set on a budget is likely to consider compromises on the 1893 and 1895 coins. Granted, I have atrocious taste in coins, in that I don't automatically turn up my nose at a coin that won't slab cleanly. But I'm not the only such degenerate who shops on eBay. Good luck!
Very Good would be pushing it. More like a G-6 for detail but marked up with initials that would kill it for it's wholesale value. It would be kicked out as a cull. What someone would pay retail such as eBay is anyone's guess.
