Just picked up this morgan at my usual gold/silver pawnshop for short money for the date. I paid 80 bucks but im not sure if scratches are from rough circulation or cleaning. Also i was thinking it may be an au50-53. Im not sure so id like some opinions on the grade also thanks guys im still learning.
If you're new to Morgans one of the basic things to look at is the breast feathers on the eagle on the reverse. They are worn down on this coin. Although it is scratchy as a whole, most of them can probably be attributed to the wear and bag marks. I don't think the coin was harshly cleaned, although I wouldn't be surprised if it was dipped. I think your grade of 50 to 53 AU is appropriate. You did well for that price!
petro thanks for your response. this is the problem i have with the whole tailfeather wear issue. Some of my slabbed ms pieces have almost a flat breast i read that the breast feathers is a poor way to tell if there is wear due to the fact that some morgan dollars were not struck very well????
Although I also believe this coin was not cleaned...some of those scratches on the obverse are deep enough where they might be considered damage. So, this coin might not slab...or would end up in a "Genuine" no grade slab.
Agreed, to a certain extent. I have seen many Peace Dollars, and although they have larger fields then Morgan Dollars, I have seen lower AU pieces (without surfaces hairlines) make it into an AU50 slab. Usually with numerous the hairlines, TPG's ding it a grade. -Brian
I just think some of those marks in the field are so deep...that they are more than normal bag marks. I think they are evident of something more. However, being a 1893...perhaps the TPGs will be more forgiving.
Looks like low AU details but I think the excessive circulation dings will knock it down to XF. I see no harsh cleaning but it does appear to have been dipped. It's a pricey enough coin that I would probably have it graded. Lance.
Do you really think this coin would grade? Those hits on her chin and in front of her neck (above the first star) are so deep IMHO they could be considered damage.
In my experience coins with weak breast feathers also have weakness in the hair above the ears. Thats the first place to look when considering strike and wear.
I belive the tpgs are more lenient on deep hits present on large heavy coins stored in bags like morgans. I posted a while back about a cc morgan on tt that had deep gash on the eagles breast that was holdered as an ngc65
