Here’s a recent find off eBay--the Snow-1 1893/189 (s). I lucked out--it turns out the coin looks much better in-hand than the auction photos. It’s a mid-brown coin with a lot of remaining luster; I’ll put it around AU50. Shot using a low lighting angle to bring out the details of the RPD. This was taken with a Nikon AW110--a 16mpx dive camera that takes OK macro photos. Later, I'll post pics using my dedicated 36mpx macro setup that resolves much more detail and better color rendition. Quick photo of the obverse showing some of the luster of the coin.
Very nice! IMO, the photos look very good as they are to illustrate the RPD, state of preservation, and color.
Here's a new pic, shot with my 36mpx dSLR. It captures a lot more detail of the RPD. The dark arrow might show a 3/3. An earlier die state in MS might show more.
My dSLR does a better job capturing the mid-brown color of the coin, although it's hard to really depict the luster you see when turning the coin in-hand. It has more luster than the typical EF45, so I'm going with AU50.
Nice find I love cherry picking coins. The hunt then the find is just so rewarding. I'm so shocked when I work a show and, some dealers I know have hundred of dollars in variety coins in their inventory and don't know it! I showed one dealer a cpg and a Jefferson variety book he increase his profits by 20 %
