Nice picture and coin. They're 'pretty common' but the 1893 is the rarer of the two I think. The 1892 is more available. Bone
They are fairly common. The 1892 has a mintage of 950,000 and the 1893 has a mintage of 1,550,405. Charlie
That's our nation's first commemorative coin, too. At the end of the World's Fair, there were many that had not sold, and they were dumped into circulation. At late as the 1950s, I've heard, it was not too rare a thing to find them in your change. The Columbian Exhibition was an amazing event. Your coin looks like its in pretty good shape, a tiny bit better than mine. I have little confidence in my grading skills...Uncirculated?
i dont know much about the coin. i got it while cleaning my wife's grandparents house. it was in the bottom of a drawer full of stuff.
Nice coin. I don't own on of those but I have always wanted one. Next time I am at a coin show I will have to check to see if I can find a nice one. I have seen some nice toned ones.
I've posted this photo before but thought it might be of interest in this thread. It is an 1893 half and a medal that was also sold at the Expo. Both of these sold for a dollar and a lot of people didn't bite because that was a good day's pay for a lot of them. But judging from this poster, everyone had a good time.Check out the "Monster Concert" at the bottom.
