My local dealer has a handful of these that he is selling for $39.50 a piece. I am not sure how the grading works on these, but they look in BU condition. What is the going rate for these? At this price, is that a good buy? What things should I look for when purchasing? This is the type of ticket he has. This isn't one that is in his shop but just a file photo.
I like these tickets. If you do a search they have been brought up before. There are the set of 6 I think and then the day pass's that some have attached chits in high grade and some child pass's that are smaller size.
This is not one of the scarce tickets and the centering is not great. Typically on eBay these will bring $15-20, so at least for the Columbus ticket his price is a little steep. If he has a Franklin or a Handel at that price, grab it. You'll find some of these posted here http://www.cointalk.com/t107131/#post884807
I like them too especially the native American ones. Thanks for the info. The picture isn't of the ticket at my dealer, just a pic off the net.
For the 1992 World Columbian Stamp Expo, American Bank Note issued a set of souvenir cards reprinting all six tickets, using the original engraved plates. The difference is they do not have serial numbers and the back of the card has a note with the ABNC logo certifying it was printed by the company. I'd be very surprised if anyone cut these down to fool a collector into thinking they were originals -- they are actually a lot scarcer than the actual tickets. You should be alert for color photocopies, however. I've seen these on ebay, but they are usually called "copies" in the description. Intaglio engravings will feel rough if you lightly run your fingernail over the raised ink; photocopies are smooth.
what gsalexan said is a good start. Rule #1: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Rule #2: See rule #1
