A good rule of thumb for value is looking at liberty's head piece to see how many letters of "LIBERTY" are visible. If all the letters are obliterated the coin is probably worth less than $6.00. (Good condition or worse) A partial LIBERTY would mean VG condition and about $10.00 of value. judging by your description the coin is not in any better condition than this.
