I don't have a 19th century Krause handy, so I was wondering what this is worth? Picked it up in a group of other silver coins yesterday (it's my first DOA coin).

Numista lists the mintage as semi-key at 126,000:

Thanks for the coin complement. MS64 coins normally have a decent level of eye appeal.

I have been collecting coins from Germany for about 10 years now, and I had always ignored the Germany East Africa coins, as I was not very interested in colony coins and was not a huge fan of their design (over other German States coins). Having said that, there seems to be much more demand for these coins over the past few years with prices increasing pretty significantly (the 2 Rupie coins especially).

I wonder if it has to do with countries like Germany joining the EU and no longer producing its own currency - maybe there is more nostalgia for the coins due to the feeling that an entire era of coin "art" has come to an end. Will you be collecting Euros anytime soon? I know I won't...

(By the way, that wasn't a "slam" to Euro collectors. I know there are collectors out there for Euros, and if that's your thing, great. I am not very interested in moderns.)

I think African coins in general and colony coins are a growing market right now. I can't say why people are interested, but I've noticed on eBay that these coins tend to sell for above book prices consistently.

Not quite sure where that additional demand would be. Maybe outside the euro area, dunno. When I look at prices of coins from this country (Federal Republic of Germany) from the DM years, they certainly have not gone up in the past 12 to 13 years.

With "imperial" coins such as this 1 rupie piece that may be different. I actually have no idea. Then again, I primarily collect what you don't collect, such as those pieces from the 22 euro area countries. :)

Yes, that is what I was referring to.

I collect "pieces" from euro area countries... just not Euros like the ones in the pictures I posted currently issued by Germany.

Are we saying the same thing? Sorry if my posts are unclear, its allergy season here in NY and I am on some heavy meds right now... very foggy!

Sort of, yes. It's just that the coins you do not collect (euro circulation coins and commemorative €2 coins) are the ones I primarily collect. In other words, we are not after the same ones. ;)
