My cousin is a bank teller and this is his first big find in circulated coins in a few years working at the same bank when a customer brought this in with change it caught his eye and he asked the customer. Neither of them knew much about it except my cousin thought it might be silver so he kept it and brought it his mothers antique store for sale. I know we have all heard of similar stories and had this not been MY cousin, I would think it's a line as well. He wanted his mother to get as much as possible for it but when he found out I was interested he said to take whatever price I offer him. Now I don't want to rip my cousin off but I know I cannot afford to pay full book price, and he is willing to take way less from me. Can someone give me some help with a grade and what would be fair market value, and we will make a deal from there? I have wnated a Carson City and this may be my best chance to own one, but I am not going to buy the coin just to flip it.
I don't buy Morgan's very often so I am not in touch with the market ~ others may really disagree with this estimate. The 2008 Blue book has the value at $65 for EF and $55 for VF. I think if you offer your cousin an amount in this approximate range you both should/may be happy. On eBay I am sure he could do better but there are no hassles/charges with selling to you, so it should all be good. He makes a nice profit and you get a piece from the Carson City Mint. Not a bad deal. I hope this helps and it will be interesting to see what others say. I would also be interested to hear what the current grey sheet buy price is.
I live in Tigerton, but I make trips to appleton about once a month to visit my niece and go to the coin shop on Nortlhland Ave.
