Hi, my question is, does toning enhance the value of a circulated coin like this? Here are a couple of pics.
Though it is pleasing to my eye, No it shouldn't bring a significant premium. If it does it may only be a couple of dollars
I don't believe there is much of a premium to be had for curculated toned Morgans. I used to own several in PCGS holders and I think I sold them already graded for around $35 a pop so raw would be less.
It is important to remember that color is not the only component to the toning premium. Color + Luster = Eye appeal. The more eye appeal, the higher the premium. By definition, circulated coins have impaired luster. Therefore, the eye appeal of a circulated toner will almost always be less impressive than the same toning on an uncirculated coin. Another factor to consider is that common date Morgan Dollars are very inexpensive in the lower mint state grades. Why would someone want to pay a premium for a circulated common date Morgan when for just a little more money they can buy an uncirculated common date Morgan? Having said all that, the color on the coin you posted would not drive a significant premium even if found on a mint state Morgan Dollar.
Oh ya...well what do you know Lehigh...shouldn't you be over on the NGC forums aswering that question about the 1955-P Nickel lol
