1889-CC worth grading?

    Hello,

I'm pretty new to collecting and picked up this 1889-CC awhile back. I'm in a position to have it graded along with a few others and was wondering if it would even be worth it? It almost looks cleaned and has a small dent on the reverse rim. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks for the quick responses guys and thanks for the warm welcome coinlover! Opinions at my local coin shop varied also. Looks like a need a tie breaker...

I'd grade it, if for no other reason than to have it authenticated. That's a $2000+ coin in XF40 and up to and probably over $8000 in AU50-55.

Edited to add that yours definitely doesn't fall into the AU category, but if genuine, it is still a valuable coin.

Would the coin grade with that damage on the reverse rim? I wouldn't think so.

I'm with you there robec, that's what's really leaning me toward doing it but with the dent in the bottom corner of the reverse I'm sure it will come back damaged taking away most of its value. Otherwise it looks to have XF charateristics.

I would grade it just because of the value of the coin. NGC, in my opinion, would be the best service because they will grade if genuine and should give it a details grade, too. PCGS will only mark it genuine with no details grade.

I think that is more of a VF coin, but it is still $1000 - $1500. That should be worth certifying, but I would go through a dealer to assure that it is not a fake in any way.

rlm, even with the damage? I'm seeing quite a few considered "genuine" on ebay that people are asking $1500-3000 for but don't look near as good as mine, even with the rim damage. Not that they are selling or anything...

IMO, knowing that the coin is genuine will increase its value, not hurt it

Where did you get it, how long have you had it, did you test it with a magnet ?
Not meaning to offend you in any way.

No offense taken. I got it on ebay about 1 month ago. I did the magnet test when it and it didn't stick.

Most certainly get it graded! It may "genuine" and may not...I've seen worse get cleanly graded. The important thing is that, once slabbed, it's guaranteed real. And that will increase its value.

I like it, BTW. Very handsome, wholesome look.

It sure is. Beautiful coin though. I might get one someday, but it won't be in that condition.

Thanks for the encouragement Lance! I'll most certainly get it graded and will cross my fingers on a VF but not going to get my hopes up.

My feeling is that you should have this coin certified to ensure that it is a genuine 1889-CC. The rim may be an issue, and maybe it is cleaned. If so, if you go with ANACS or NCS instead of NGC or PCGS, would that make your purpose to make sure it is genuine?
