Unfortunately, I think it's a copy. The CC's do not look right to me, but I need closer pics to be sure.
You wouldn't share with the others here the diagnostics for determining whether or not this coin is a fake? I think you have it wrong. I think that is exactly what we do to help each other from making mistakes when we make an expensive coin purchase.
Becky, I think that the look of the Mint Mark is due to pixel distortion! I copied and pasted the top and bottom pictures of the Reverse to my PC then blew them up. In both pictures, the Mint Mark looked different! It is really hard to tell much with the pictures but I don't see anything that would trigger me to say that it is not genuine! I guess due to it's rarity, it is easy to assume the worse but I think we should hold off on any judgement until we get some better close-up pictures of the coin. My recommendation for the OP, is to submit the coin to a TPG or at the least, take it to a TPG's table at a Coin Show. Frank
1889 CC's do not have round C's. When I see those I run. Here is what they should look like.... See the difference?
Care to elaborate as to why you are definitely sure. Your input would mean a great deal to me. Though the pictures aren't really good enough for an accurate grade IMO I was about to give it at least a VF possible XF. Thanks, Allen
Sure thing Allen. First of all, notice the shape of the 9. It is distinctively different than any 9 seen on any morgan dollar. Also, the CC's are close, small and quite round unlike the typical cc mintmark. The coin also appears to have what I can only describe as a granular appearance, which is typically seen on chinese counterfeits (can't say for sure though that it is from China)
Great, thanks for input. With so many fakes in the market it sure would be a huge let down to end up with one at the end of the day. No cheap shot intended sdtyandle. Allen
i completely agree w/ zane and becky and rotobeast. even tho the pics are small, it is still identifiable as fake. larger pics would confirm more diagnostics irregularities and at absolute best it is altered w/ environmental. chemical, and/or mechanical means. i also agree w/ both becky, zane, and rotobeast's willingness to comment on the coin in question. even if we and all other internet coin forums are testing grounds for"SPYS"...i want to see what they are working on before it hits the market. i also tend to take someone at face value searching for help. true colors come out as time progresses. thank you for posting your pics. to be certain send it to a reputable tpg for authentication.....steve
1889 CC Morgan Thank you all for helping me learn the hard way, I took a risk on this coin and thought it was fake, but was not absolutely sure. Good thing is I am not absolutely stupid and will be getting my money back. As my dad always said; "If it's too good to be true"...
I agree. I enlarged the CC mintmark and it is not authentic in appearence. I also agree with Rotobeast, the "9" does not look like any I've seen on a Morgan. a Little late ,just showing the difference John
i would agree with everyone else. ii just doesnt look right. good thing you will be able to get you money back. now you know for the future what to look out for.
