I'm in Puerto Rico visiting family. My cousin showed me his coin collection and he has this interesting Dime. Looks like the Reverse was filed down then carved into this intricate design. I googled it and there are others with similar carved designs. Sorry for the small pictures but I don't have my editing software on my travel laptop.

Very cool 19th Century love token Paddyman. IMHO cooler than a normal seated. Great piece of exnumia.

Wonder who can show the oldest Love Token, although they might be making fakes in China right now. My entry's an 1839 dime.

I have a love token made of an 188? Argentina Silver Ten Centavo. When my dad was a kid some kid at school gave it to him as a trade for something. The only problem is that the coin had a dark patina so he used steel wool on it and maybe scraped at it with a screw driver to make it shiny:banghead::banghead::banghead:.

By the way.. Just some interesting fact. I want to share this from the Wikipedia website - Quote "The name of Argentina (a Spanish adjective meaning "silvery"), traditionally called the Argentine in English, is ultimately derived from the Latin argentum "silver" and the feminine of the adjectival suffix -īnus. The first use of the name Argentina can be traced back to the first voyages made by the Spanish and Portuguese conquerors to the Río de la Plata (meaning "River of Silver"), in the first years of the 16th century" - closed quote

Here is where the Rio de la Plata runs into the ocean, looking easterly; Argentina on the right, Uruguay on the left, mud in the middle:

Does the EPA know about all this unruly mud?! Are they, um, tracking it?

My dad is from Argentina so that is why he has an Argentina love token, ethnically he is Swiss though even though he lived in Argentina from when he was born to when has was 30. His relatives are traced back for centuries in Switzerland, my Grandparents moved to Argentina when they were 30 or so and that is when my Dad was born. I have been to Argentina three times to meet some family and it is a pretty cool place (I love the weather). It is funny you mentioned silver because my hotel for all these trips was right near Rio de Plata (Meaning River of Silver in Spanish). I do not think that there was ever that much silver ever there but the Spanish who came there back in the 1500's thought there was more than there was. It is funny that the love token I have (I will take photos of it) is considered a world coin here but over there when my dad got it was the same as a seated dime.

Another interesting connection, I have always wondered how Uruguay survived, with two "supersized" countries on either side, Argentina and Brazil, either of which could have swallowed Uruguay up in a flash, but didn't.

You are quite right, the vast majority of Spanish plundering took place in Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia, where the silver mines were, far removed from Argentina.
