I came across this 1888 indian with a 7 on the flat surface inbetween the 8 and "A" in AMERICA an interesting coin, i can see a 7 with the naked eye as well as some damage to the coin just under and to the left that could be confused for what i'm talking about. The 7 does not look fat or curvy, it is skinny and straight. the top right corner of the 7 almost touches the "A" I will post my best photo. please, any info would be great!
It looks like a few things have hit this coin just right in a few places that makes it appear to look like a 7. I'm mostly just guessing because your photo is not very good. I don't know if this is the case or not with your coin, I have seen it happen many times on coins where dents and gouges can create things that looks like letters or numbers.
Gosh, I'm so torn here, it seems so obvious in my hand yet it does not look like the "7" in the indianhead cent line.. to straight, sharp and skinny i think. think its a coincidental damage? or possibly an old forgery? I ask because I have come across a few fakes in my time, a1914 D (very nicely done, almost had me for a few seconds) and a 1944 steel, obviously fake, looked yellow.
