1888/7 with the big fat cud, but...

I just can't see the overdate. I know it's miniscule and might be covered in a bit of crud, or what looks like a dramatically tiny scrape above/left of the 8. Hard to say since this is the first one I've ever examined in person. What do you all think? I know the date position is a factor, as is the 8th feather tip (but many on the PCGS coinfacts site don't appear to have a weak 8th feather despite the claim). I guess the Cud is glaringly diagnostic, though. Any thoughts guys?

    It could be an 1888/7.
I need a LARGE image of the date before I can give a more objective opinion.
And I assume others will need to see that image too.

Then if we tend to think "yes" it will have to go to one of the TPGs (PCGS or NGC).

    But first, the image.

    1. There is no evidence of the 8/7 in your IMAGES of the date. See post above.

    2. The rim break on your coin is NOT in the correct position.

    3. Decades ago, a "cud" was a break in the rim break. The "new" definition of a cud involves at least a little bit of the field - so your coin does not have a "cud" by the "modern" definition. Let's just call it a "rim break" to make the purists happy. ;)

I can't see the overdate either.

Not a big fat cud either. Miniature, baby, midget rim break.

I may have exaggerated with the "big fat cud" but I've re-checked it against S-1's and it sure looks like a match to me, but idk. Taking close up pics is a challenge, but I think I see that spike on the top left. I wonder about something being hidden below the crud under the 8. Should I use a little acetone to try to see what it uncovers?

Guess what, I see a spike too. I wonder what you have because the position if the date looks a little off and the "spike" is in the wrong position. Very interesting.

That's it. This one's on ebay. Rick Snow has it up for sale.

See if you can clean that crud off around the bottom of the last 8. I use Blu-Bow on all of my Indians and have never had a problem. Where did you find it? There was one on ebay a while back that was unattributed. The bidding was crazy. That's a 5 figure coin for sure.

It could very well be the 8/7. I don't see any signs of the 7 but, with the degree of wear on the coin that doesn't surprise me. So I'm basing my opinion on the cud alone. I know its a highly sought after coin but, for me if I need to use a high power glass to see a variety I have little interest in the coin. Even in high grades it hard to see.
