    Hello,

I'm still learning how to really identify error coins and was hoping you smart guys could help me out here. I was going through a few bags of wheaties and indian cents and came across an 1888 cent, so I checked the date to see if it had an overdate. While I myself don't really see the signs of a 7 poking out from the upper left or lower left, it is very easy to see on this coin that the final 8 is very much more bold than the other numbers. I read that there are varieties that are not as clear to see the overdate.

These pictures give a little example of the date, I'll try to get a better image of the difference, but in-hand it's very striking how much more bold the last 8 is.

Is that an indication of a restrike on that last 8, or just normal for these issues?

    Many thanks!

If you don't see an over date then it's probably NOT an over date.

Well, I can't really see doubling or overdating in some of the close-ups of many coins in the red book either, so I thought it couldn't hurt to ask. And I thought it was curious that the final 8 is so much more strongly struck than the other numbers.

    Thanks.
