Here is a 55 maybe 58 or thereabouts 1887-S I'll bet they're individuals out there who would like to get their hands on it to do a little work ( wink, wink) Bone
Daggarjon They are bag marks...gold is soft so it almost always has more bag marks then a harder metal like silver or nickel... I don't see any wear on the coin so I was going to say MS62 but does the hair have some wear??...if so then I would agree with AU55 Speedy
That's a bit excessive for bag marks - almost looks like the coin has been dropped on the ground, concrete or asphalt, and stepped on. It's a shame because the coin does have great detail and likely would grade 55 or so without the damage. But because it is damaged - more like a net grade of VF. I think the grading companies would send that one back
In hand it's much less noticeable, not too bad at all. A local dealer offered me 53 money for it only one month ago. I used a flash which accentuates the marks greatly. It was on white bond paper too. Not sure why it looked purple??? If it was an 1887 well then it really wouldn't matter I think that's what he had in mind too, shady character, lol. His shop is in the police blotter about once a year Bone
5d Those coins have such a nice look, I wish they made newer coins like them. I really like the eagle on the reverse. Anyway, nice coin.
The back looks nice, but the fields are somewhat washed out by the lighting so they may be hiding something. From what I see the coin might be unc, (I don't believe it is possible to grade higher than AU from a photo. To easy to miss something.) but with all those marks and chatter there is no way it would go better than a 60. Difference in value between AU and MS-60 is prety much a wash. If there IS some wear on the coin then I would think it would be worth XF money at best.
