Here is the first gold coin I ever owned, a lightly circulated 1887-S Half Eagle. It was given to me several years ago by a family member. What grade would you put on the flip if it was yours. The dealer in town made a joke about filing off the mint mark when I showed it to him a few years ago, Hmmmm, LOL... Thanks for looking, the pic was just taken under natural light conditions and looks much shiner than it really is. The dark tone on the bottom of the reverse is a hint of shadow. Take Care Ben

I'm really struggling with this. Are these coins notorious for having a soft strike on the obv ? On the rev the wing-tips look really good, but the hair on the obv looks worn or flattened. I really like this coin and want to say MS-63, but if the hair is actually flattened from stacking I'd have to go MS-60/1. I'm just guessing without referring to my ANA guide. Can anyone educate me further regarding the hair detail ?
The angle is a matter of degree, just a little will allow you to capture luster. A little too much and all you get is reflection. It differs with every coin.
Gorrgeuos coin Bone. Very nice. I'l have to say AU-50-AU-53. Awesome coin, but the first set of pics, kind of made me wish I had my sunglasses on, lol. Phoenix
XF45. Wear evident on hair (forehead, temple, above coronet, curl on neck, bun). Baggie in prime focal points. Nice luster. Original. All opinions aided by polarized ray-bans.
