I bought a bag of cull IHCs for cheap at a coin show today and I think this one's an error. Maybe a strike though/lamination/planchet flaw or something like that? It doesn't look like damage but I guess it could be possible. Opinions appreciated, thanks.
The reverse is out of focus, trying to see if there is a mark relating to a pmd strike on the front. hard call, could be PMD or ??
I think it could have a delamination that absorbed a liquid and now has corrosion expanding from the inside out. Someone may have picked at the delamination and made it look like damage.
Get some better photos of the obverse. It doesn’t look like damage to me. Looks like die cracks in OF AMERICA. That makes me think it was a delamination before it was struck. Need better photos of that entire area.
The reverse appears that it may be a different coin. Are you sure it is the same coin as the pictured obverse? My reason is the reverse rim and edge looks different than those of the obverse. Maybe it is just the photo . . . or my old eyes. On the obverse, I vote damage.
Took more photos today. Looking closer, I definitely think it is an error, just not sure what type specifically. Lamination crack a valid term?
I wasn't sure about this initially, but with the new pics, I believe it's a planchet defect/lamination. There could also be some underlying corrosion as pointed out by @alurid
