I haven't been here in a while. i kind of lost interest in the hobby for a while... I recently went back and looked up a good portion of my old collection on ebay, because i never actually had any idea what most of my foreign coins were worth. in these searches i found that this coin was selling for a pretty good amount in good condition, but I don't know what grade to consider this, or what the value for that grade would be. any help would be appreciated. here are the images 1.the entire reverse has about the same detail as the shield 2.the obverse has about the same detail as the reverse, even though it is had to see in this image overall it the details are great, but there is a bit of green stuff on the obverse, and I don't know how much this effects the grade
A good looking coin! Grading UK style the reverse is VF, the obverse slightly less - maybe F+. It looks as if it needs removing from the holder, both to get rid of the extraneous fluff, and to look more closely at the verdigris. The latter does need to be dealt with before it does more damage, but I am not one to advise on conservation. 1887 is a straightforward year for Victoria pennies as there is only one die combination - Obverse 12 with Reverse N. Book price in VF is GBP 10, but you may get a little more on the bay as there are lots of "date collectors" looking to fill their gaps with half decent examples. I hope that helps, Paddy
I sold a bunch of 1880s and 1890s British pennies on eBay recently and most fetch between $1 and $3 or so unless it's a scarcer date, and I don't think this is. Lots of people collect these but there are a lot out there too.
