I was just wondering if anyone had any information on why the 1886-O Morgan Dollar jumps so high in value in mint state grades. I understand that it must mean that they were only saved in lower grades, but what made this particular date such a condition rarity? I guess this date wasn't included in the bank vault bags released in the 1960s. Anyone have any info on this?
Here's a quote from Q. David Bowers' book on Morgan Silver Dollars.... The 1886-O dollars are very common in worn grades today and exceedingly rare in choice to gem Mint State. Most all were released in the 19th century or melted in 1918, and few were ever saved for numismatic purposes.
