    Hi,
I recently bought a 1886 Morgan Dollar for $19. Can you please look at the coin and tell me the approximate grade, price(if I paid too much) and if it has been cleaned. It has no toning... pictures are blue because of camera... Thanks

If you ask me that looks like a lead fake......can you get a weight?

    I agree with Speedy!

It does seem to be way off color for silver (even tarnished silver).

You might want to weight it and if it is led, make sure you wash your hands afterwards!

I compared it to friend's 1897 Morgan Dollar obtained long time ago. Weight is the same as the other one and it is 0.006 lbs (approx. 28.38 g)... which is close to 26.73 g - official weight. I think it is close enough to say it is not fake. I don't have a more precise weight, sorry. The coloring in the picture is a camera coloring, not real color... it doesn't have any toning, maybe a bit of dirty tone, but that's all...
Considering it is real, what is the grade, price and does it look like it has been cleaned before? I would like to know your opinion cause I bought it from an non-collector.

Even if it is real it's value is about $10 - $12 - melt. But if you are right on the weight, it's not close enough - it would definitely be a fake.

I say that the weight agrees with my idea...that it is a fake.....sorry to tell you this.
The coin is still worth alittle as some people collect fakes.....I have no idea on what you might get out of it but I would keep it because its a neat coin!...I've only seen about 2 other fake Morgans that looked like this.

i said that weight is 0.06 lb as measured by weight not used to weight small amount. Official exact weight would be 0.0565 lb - i don't see that as a proof of it being fake. its just rounding up! and the coin is white, doesn't have toning... so why do you think it is fake? please explain... to me the weight is FINE compared to other morgan and compared to official weight... i can take other pictures of the coin so that you see it more... just tell me what you want to see.. i don't see evidence showing it's fake... :)

    Thanks

Once again, the weight doesn't have more digits... it is rounding up...so the weight is between 0.055 lb and 0.065 lb - 26 g to 30.8 g - maybe ill get more precise weight but it is the same as another morgan from whole another place... so.. please reconsider

GDJMSP: if its real it doesn't have collectors value? why not?

Nope - it's because of the condition or grade of the coin. That is a common date and easily obtained in much better condition. Even a BU ( Brilliant Uncirculated ) example would only sell for about $20. The value of your coin is based on its silver content.

As for the weight - take the coin to any jewelry store and ask them to weigh it for you. They will be able to give you an accurate weight to the nearest hundredth of a gram.

I agree....take it to a store where they will tell you the weight.
As for telling you what I see wrong...its kindof hard to do....after collecting for awhile and looking at photos day after day you kindof just pick up on somethings.....one thing that jumps out is how crude thg coin looks...I think that points to it being a lead fake....the ones I've seen were pretty nice fakes...just that the weight was off alittle--and some of the design was missing.

As for where can you get a BU for $20.....just shop around....check ebay....and online coin dealers.....also you might have a coin dealer in your town....that would be a good place to start first.

I'm fairly certain that your coin is real, and has been harshly cleaned.

Well the weight says it is ok....I'm thinking F/VF for the grade....value....about $10 I would say.

I think its cleaned....it lower the value because when a coin is cleaned it takes a layer of the coin off....it not the coin it was when it was minted...search the forum for Cleaning and you will see more reasons and ones said better than I can say.

Oh, yes, it's been cleaned. Looks like baking soda and lemon juice may have been employed at some point in the past.

yes, it is likely cleaned, but it doesn't affect the value of this coin much at all. This coin's value is pretty close to it's intrinsic value and the cleaning didn't change the volume of silver (perceptably) so it didn't chang it's value. On most coins cleaning can be quite detrimental to value, but that isn't the case with this coin.
