I need assistance from the community with the grade and value of the above pictured 1886 and 1921 Morgan silver dollars please. The pictures were made on a scanner. My modest collection was started with some coins handed down to me and a few given to me by friends and family. I'm in the process now of trying to grade and value what I have. I figured my own collection would be a good place to start because I have a handful of Morgan's in, what appears to be, a wide variety of conditions. Being new to collecting I find grading to be the most frustrating aspect. By understanding what something is really worth in the market place I hope to avoid overpaying as I grow my collection. The most fun by far has been learning the history behind the Morgan. It is a truly fascinating story. Thanks.
High AU on the '86. The '21 looks to be mint state. As for value, both are fairly common and don't command much of a premium collector wise. I'd say between $25 to $30 for each, but others more knowledgeable with the series will chime in with better opinions on price.
about $30 for the '86 and about $25 for the 1921. If the 1886 coin had a mint mark, then you would be looking at a few hundred dollars, but there is no sign of a mint mark.
Thanks racinghy. You are correct, there's no mint marks. I have a couple other Morgans with mint marks but they're not in as good of condition. Your input was very helpful. Thank you again.
Very good. Do you have a specific coin denomination, or other category, that you focus on collecting or are your tastes fairly broad in scope?
I mainly deal with the wheat cents, and the indian head cents, but I usually give help all around, and collect all types when I can. Mostly its the cent series since I go roll hunting. Only time I found something good in a roll of coins other than pennies was a 1916 buffalo nickel, but it was really roughed up
I'd say AU for both the '86 and '21. I do think any of those coins will go for a minimum of $30 on eBay with the 86 and 21 grabbing a little more if you had high res pictures and not scans.
They are all common and basically worth the same. Even if the 21 is unc (which I do not believe), it is in the same category. Also, your 88-O is a "hot lips" and is probably the best of the bunch.
You are right. The scanner is no way to get an accurate image of a coin. Digital cameras should be on sale at Best Buy 4th of July weekend. I need to get one. (and learn how to use it)
BooksB4Coins- you got a great eye. I must have studied this coin for hours under a magnifying glass and did not recognize that.
