Any input on the grade of this 1885 Liberty Nickel? Sorry about the pictures. It's the best I can do until I figure out decent lighting or get a better set-up. The white streak on the obverse is on the case, not the coin. Is this worth sending to be graded?

Well, I wouldn't be too hard on yourself. I would peg this one around a VG8, you have a few letters in liberty showing. What's with the squiggly line, hair?

I'm going to say VG10 (all letters of LIBERTY but I visible) details (pitting/corrosion).

Before photographing a coin, you really should remove it from the holder. That said, I would call it VG10 going only on visible detail, but cannot say more without better images.

IMO it could pass for F12 ,it has a few tiny issues but over all a decent piece.

Thanks for the input so far. Here are slightly better pictures with no plastic in the way. 1885 Updated - Copy.jpg 1885 Updated 2 - Copy.jpg

I would agree with this. My only concern would be the reverse, if that would details grade it. I am betting the TPG, (if you submitted it), may overlook it since its an 85.

Any other date and I think its a detail grade.

I think the pitting on the reverse is a bit to severe for a number grade, but VG details seems rite.

Very fair guess sir. I guess I just believe keys get a little more leeway, but technically you are spot on in my view.

Hard to argue that TPGs will give a bit of slack on key date coins, but this one may be a little much to overlook. I'm not trying to be hard on your coin Pilgram, just going by experience. If you were going to sell your coin, I would suggest getting it authenticated even if it would get a details grade. It would bring much more money over a raw example.

Thanks to everyone for your input. I'll probably send this one in when I get some others together.
