I know of the overdate errors for 80/79 & 87/86 but not aware of any for 1885. May not be anything but something is there. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
It looks fake to me, too. The "1" is too fat, the two "8's" are cockeyed, the crossbar of the "5" is too long, the ball of the "5" should be closer to the beginning of the loop and slightly larger, the neck "Vee" doesn't appear to line up with the slot between the denticles and to top it all off, she has acne (from being a cast copy). Chris
Very crude fake. The legitimate 85 overdate is extremely clean, and to the naked Eye does not have that doubled look. It has a look similar to the " o over s" Morgan, and is not sloppy like that.
my first thought was fake. The mark in question looks like a blob, possibly from the coin being cast.
Look at the rim of the coin, the fine tiny details aren't there, it's just blended together. Here's a page about high quality Chinese fakes. http://coins.about.com/od/worldcoins/ig/Chinese-Counterfeiting-Ring/Chinese-Fake-Coin-Minting.htm
This is a real 1885-p VAM-2 Doubled 5 dash 8. the closest I know to what yours might be but I don't think so. It is part of my growing vam yearbook. I'm not aware of an 85 overdate but I'm still fairly new to morgans though learning fast.
