Would be interested to know what this might be worth. Grade looks high but looks a little washed out but that might be the sellers photo, not in hand yet. I think there were only about 280,000 minted.
Hard to say. Is this a raw coin? The surfaces look completely lifeless, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was cleaned (though it's too hard to tell from this image). At best it would grade AU 50-53 based on these photos. Since this coin has a rather flat price structure from VF to low MS, I'd guess it falls somewhere in the $5-600 range if it's not cleaned.
Thanks.......yes did say it looked washed out but maybe better in hand.........will post again when arrives.
If it actually has nice luster, I would grade it 63 or 64. Hope it's better than the images make it look.
I bought it cheaply at auction so I think I am on a winner no matter how it turns out.........the Europeans seemed to miss the low mintage.
That's good to hear, because it's seemingly been recently dipped - surfaces stripped - as best evidenced by the very fresh toning around the obverse periphery. I'm hoping the images are not faithful to the actual surface condition. Either way, the only way it would ever make it into a "righteous" slab (not that I'm suggesting you go that route) is to dip it again. Depending on just_how_bad the surfaces actually are, it could still be a $500 coin.
Thanks for the informative and expert feedback.........I have never dipped a coin and would probably mess it up anyway........I think even if makes a details grade I will do well......
I do have quite a few Morgan's but not sure if they are nice grades or dipped, cleaned, etc.......just sitting in the safe right now........the Brits here where I live aren't much help.
The only question is the accuracy of those images. The "look" they portray is that of a lifelessly-overdipped coin, all luster destroyed and no hope of ever "recovering" it to a reasonable eye appeal. Not all cleaned coins lack fundamental eye appeal. However, they also portray a look which a scanner or poor photography could impart to a coin, so there is room for optimism. I look forward to your in-hand opinion/images.
Why? I doubt it as no one has suggested it but if it is as it came from an auction house and not a private seller it just goes back.............
If it's from Europe, it might very well be cleaned. I've heard they have different standards there and sometimes will not mention a light cleaning in a sales description.
Do you see any specific signs it's a fake? I'm not about to try and identify the VAM from the rather small image, but I don't see any sign of it being fake.
They're more inclined to over there than we are, from what I understand, too. I know. And these are beautiful images, but for an illustration in a book, maybe, not to sell a coin on.
