Folks, I have posted quite a bit lately on 3 cent pieces... I got this one back from PCGS. They called it proof 63, but looking at the position of the date, the rims, etc I just dont see it. The 1 and the 4 line up below the hairline on the top condition proof they have and line up above the hairline on the top condition circ strike... Folks have any thoughts? http://images.pcgs.com/CoinFacts/28357224_38457748_max.jpg - mine pr63 http://images.pcgs.com/CoinFacts/27964534_38227128_max.jpg - top MS66 http://images.pcgs.com/CoinFacts/27965546_38244651_max.jpg - top pr68 Also, the 8 and the 4 touch in all the proofs...not in mine...
According to Gifford they used four die pairs that year. All four pairs were used to make proofs, and one pair was used to make business strikes. Both the MS66 and PR68 in the pictures are from die pair 4. That was the pair used to make both proofs and business strikes. Your coin comes from die pair 2 which, according to Gifford, was only used to make proofs. If so, that is a pretty poor quality proof strike. And from die state evidence, the MS66 coin is probably a Proof as well. The earliest business strikes from that die pair have the bottom of the left ribbon on the rev polished away. It is present on all the proofs. It is also present on that MS66 coin.
aaargggh...still looking at this - if you look at every other pcgs proof coin, the second 8 is centered over a rim denticle....mine is not centered, but is centered over a space between the denticles...
