I wanted to ask some questions about this coin that I sent in and had graded. I bought this thinking that the tone was cool, but not the most attractive tone that I had seen on a morgan. I'm downsizing my collection and I dug this coin up and I'm not sure how mush of a premium this tone pattern might carry. It's such a common morgan and their are so many beautiful colorful toned examples, but I have never seen a pattern like this, what might have caused it? Makes you wonder. Sorry about the double post, I just posted the pic in the toned coin thread but it didn't feel right to ask questions there.
It all depends on how much someone else likes this toning . I don't collect toned Morgans as the ones I like are quite pricy . I'd leave the price answer for the toned guys . Me I'd pay maybe double for the toning .
Looks like end roll toning from a paper wrapper to me. I don't think you'd get much of a premium out of that toning.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and say it's more vivid in hand..I like that velvety aqua color... that old woman is welcome in my collection any day... Normally u can get toners @, or a touch over bid if your patient, and know where to shop. That said I'd ask at least $20 over if I were u, & if the right person came along and considered the coin a unique work of art, x2 bid shouldn't be out of the question either....
I like the toning in the fields. The coin also appears to have some nice luster. I'm not crazy about the toning on Ms. Liberty. I would not bid on a coin with this type toning, but that's just me. It doesn't mean others won't like it. I'm guessing a small premium for the toning, but not much.
Some guys go NUTS over end roll pattern morgan toners. That said, this one is a little "plain" for an end roll in terms of a crazy pattern. My gut feel is its a $300 +/- coin depending on if you get a war or not. Maybe try putting it up for $500 make offer and see what happens. The better the pics however, the more money it will probably bring. If you can have high end pics taken it would be worth it imo.
I like the toning and would also guess end roll toned. I would say it's in the 125-200 range and could go higher if consigned to one of the toning sellers on ebay or on GreatCollections. Although in an auction setting, it could always go lower if the right people aren't participating.
I am very fussy on toned coins as most are man made I do have some and they are nice but I stay away from most toned coins just my opinion
Thanks for the ideas to think about. I know that it doesn't have those nice vibrant rainbow colors that are so popular, but I have seen nice crescent shaped toned morgans go for a lot of money due to the size and location of the crescent tone on the coin. So I guess this coin made me start to think about toning patterns and how much it affects the value of the coin.
I don't go after toners as a rule because I just don't see the premiums sellers often want. But I have seen common date, toned Morgans go for nutty (IMHO) prices. Guess you won't know unless you take a shot.
99% of "man made" or AT coins can easily be seen as such by toning enthusiasts. There is a science to it that once understood makes all but the best AT coins stick out like a colorful sore thumb. This coin is not one of them. It's just like anything else, knowledge is power Here's a website that explains the science behind toning and color progressions on silver coinage... http://www.jhonecash.com/coins/tonedmorgans.asp
Well I wasn't really trying on this one. I walked into my local coin shop a few years ago and he had received about four nice toned coins, this one and three other common dates with nice crescent moon type tone on them. I picked them up at a fair price. Later I needed an extra coin to get five coins to send in on a submission to NGC. I threw this one in to see if this was market acceptable toning and also to test my grading skills more for educational reasons. Now I have this coin and its one of them in my collection that some days I really like it and other days I scratch my head and wonder why I am keeping it. I'm not sure what I will do with it, but I thought I would share it here as its been awhile since I've posted anything.
A pretty Morgan to me! I'd prefer it without the couple spots of missing toning, but I think it'd still bring $120 - $185.
I experiment a lot with toning Morgans. There are many different methods I've tried and I'm always looking for more. There is somebody out there who sells nothing but toned Morgans on his website. The prices he asks are outrageously high (nothing less than $1250, some well over $3000 but, no really rare mintages) I've duplicated some of his toning so I'm pretty sure his are all AT. I wonder how many he sells, if any. I also tone some bullion rounds which gives a wide variety of spectacular results. Makes me wonder if they are all really 999AG.
