    hey everyone,

new to the thread but have a major question before I get ripped off. what is a 1883 hawaii 1/4 piece worth? and what if its a proof? also how do you determine if it is a proof? the person who gave it to me thought it because he saw some original mold marks and he connected that to being the proof.. I really don't know and would greatly appreciate the help. thanks everyone

    thanks for the welcome,

and yes it does. but what is the characteristic of the proof? or better said what is the difference between the proof and the regular coin? see it has these mold markings on the side like it was in a strip of these coins and was cut off on the sides. I'll get a pic up when I get a better cam.

For one thing the fields should have a mirror finish. The devices may also be frosted. The proof coin will have sharp edges while the business strike will have rounded edges. The proof coin will have much more detail than the business strike. Those are a few of the characteristics of a proof coin.

I hate to tell you but that is usually an indication of a cast counterfeit.

    thanks hobo,

well it is very shiny and for as old as it is does seem to have some what of a mirror finish. I believe its real silver as well. but, it very well could be a cast replica. I do know that its been around the family for a while so its hard to say. once I get a better camera I'll put up a pic.

    thanks again
