What do you guys think of this nickel? I didn't win it but I know who did.

I've never seen a PCGS slab that old. About when did they stop using this type? The slab is cracked so I suspect it may have scared a lot of potential buyers off because they couldn't see the whole coin. I have a feeling this might look a lot better in hand and was a pretty good deal.

Any thoughts on it? Is the curl on the left side of the top of the shield worn or just a weak strike? Any guesses? Does it look like a true MS-62? I haven't spent much time looking at this series really.

Uhhh Leadfoot your links just go to a picture of the reverse of an 1857 large cent.

There is no complete thread with all the varieties from PCGS online right now. There is a tread accurate as of a couple years or so ago on the PCGS forum but it has some broken links to some of the pictures.

Here is a link to one I posted yesterday that shows the front of the slab and gives information about all of the varieties used from the time PCGS began until the first of the blue label slabs in Nov of 1998. (With the exception of one variety used for foreign coins which doesn't seem to fit in anywhere. It is unlike any of the others. It is from a time period when PCGS "officially" did not slab foreign coins.)

I'm finally getting around to getting all of the images uploaded online so soon I should be able to do a full updated thread of all the PCGS varieties with front and back pictures.

The thread I mentioned on the PCGS forum

And the thread on the NGC forum with the NGC varieties

Probably in todays market it might grade higher. That coin was originally on my watch list, but I screwed up some how and deleted everything by mistake. Here is my opinion on the coin based on the pictures provide - luster is flat but present, strike on shield good, but motto is not real clean. On reverse the stars look strong, 5 a little weak and same with legends. The scratched up slab and shadows might be hiding something that would keep it from grading higher. Overall I thought the coin was nice. I believe no matter what it is worth the price that won it. All just my opinion.
