I don't want to be a negative Ned but in my own personal opinion it looks both cleaned and almost proof like but not quite.
Not a proof, but somewhat PL, especially the reverse. The coin does appear to have some issues, so not really a factor in value. The halo around the lettering and stars makes me think it has been messed with.
May I ask if you bought it from a dealer or a reputable source? Or how did you acquire it? Also have you done the basic tests like weight, diameter, ping test etc., In my experience most fakes fail one of those tests. Except for professional fakes of very rare coins like the 1893 S where I’ve seen fakes made of 90% silver just like the original.
I bought it from the local coin store and I weighed it several times it always comes out 26.6 I've done the ping test and it's ringing really loud and I don't have anything to test the diameter test but it's the same size as every other Morgan I have got. I'm really interested in why there is thoughts of it being fake? Just curious if I got riped off
Hmm well the weight looks correct and if you’re saying that the ping test results are positive then I assume it’s most likely a real one. Since you bought it from a reputable dealer I wouldn’t worry about it in if I were you. Did the coin store sell it to you as problem free? I can’t speak for Pat on what is suspicions are but I do think the halo-ing around the letters is suspicious. Like someone messed with it to make it look better using an unknown substance that left behind the halo-ing.
