Gentlemen & Ladies, Aloha, I am Keith from Halawa Hawaii and joined the Coun Talk Forums so as to gain more knowledge regarding mine and my wife's coin collection. Actually it's my wife's collection, I'm just funding this party.... Anyways, my wife has been meticulously sorting her collection recently and came across an 1883 King Kalakaua I Quarter Dollar coin. It is made of copper, definitely not silver, but it is an exact replica of all actual sample we found on line, and even the ones we found on display at the Bishop Museum. The Bishop Museum is a Hawaiian History Museum the displays anything Hawaiiana, from ancient tool, dress, monies, you name it, you'll find it there. My question if I have one is this: where can we take this to have someone authenticate its validity? We took it to a local coin shop and the gentleman that owns the place referred to it as "a token", so he's obviously not an expert in such things as this. We simply want to know if this is something we can put into our collection book for viewing, or if we should lock it in the gun safe... Thank you ahead of time for taking time to read all this. Respectfully, Keith & Robynne Oahu, Hawaii
If your coin is actually made of copper, you may have a replica. You'll need to post good pictures before anybody can say anything definitive about it.
Aloha and welcome. I have a Hawaii quarter, but it is silver. An off-metal coin like this is most likely made for tourists. If you could post a picture, we might be able to help you.
