Another coin of interest I was blessed to be given from family. The first coin in this series that was minted after the Shield Nickel (1866-1883). My 1883 Gold Plated Liberty Head V nickel (Variety 1) is in AU-50 range IMHO. This first year design without the word CENTS on obverse was fraudulently gold plated and passed for $5.00 until later in the same year the mint added the word CENTS to the obverse. Does anybody have anything else to say about this coin? I will post pics later today

Not to rain on your parade or anything but most of these were made as curiosities long after the "racketeeer nickel" scandal of 1883-4.I saw one in my local coin store yesterday. The gold plate job was just too new looking to have been done 120 years ago. They were selling this thing for $15 but no takers. That's 3 times what the crooks were getting for it back in the day though.

Here's what an original would probably look like today but no good way to tell for sure.

No rain here! I am just happy to have it given to me and the history it possesses. This plating doesnt look new though. I am trying to download scanner software to post pics. Thanks for your reply though.

I have a replated one and it's pretty obvious because of the like new luster of the gold plating, thankfully i only paid about $10 for it.
