I'm curious as to what my 1883 Mexican 8 reales coin is worth. I have a general idea, but it is out of an outdated book from when I first started collecting. I am unsure of some of the marks on the bottom of the coin, but I think that the mintmark is CA. I am also unsure as to why there are a couple symbols punched into it. I have a bronze colored one as well. Let me know what you think! Thanks...
Nice coin but it wasn't minted in California if that's what you thought. I think it was minted in Culiacan, Mexico. I have one like it and I paid $20 for mine but I think they're worth a bit more. Also, mine is a Zacatecas mint mark which is not as desirable as a Culiacan mint mark. My guess is you may be able to get $45 bucks for it because of the mint mark and the chopmarks on the coin, maybe someone else will come along who knows more about Mexican coins and chopmarks as well.
Yea, I knew that is wasn't CA for california, there are so many different mintmarks listed for these, that was around how much I was thinking too...it's one of my favorites...
CA is the mintmark for Chihuahua. It is a common date from that mint, and the chop marks bring the value down a bit more.
