Just curious about the "grade" and $ value of this thing. I know very little about coins, just going through my late Mom's house and finding some stuff stashed here and there. She wasn't a collector either...just an incredible packrat. This was wrapped up in a handkerchief in the bottom of a jar of wheat straws...LOL.

Yes, I do know it's not "mint" or "uncirculated" or anything like that...it's got quite a few dinks and nasty scratches. It's funny, though...that sucker looks pretty dang nice when you're holding it in your hand. Now that I've scanned it in high-res and look at the pics...yikes...

Thanks in advance for any opinions offered.

Looks like a VG or F, which puts it in the $12 range

It's a nice coin. Notice that it was minted in San Francisco, which actually makes it a 1882 S. ;)

Note that the mintmark is tilted left - that's an indication that the coin is a variant from the original strike. Do a Search for the term "VAM" here; it'll fill you in on what I'm talking about. The VAMs with a tilted S don't necessarily bring a higher price, especially in the condition of this coin, but it's interesting to know that you have a coin that's different. :smile

Do you by some chance have a magnifying glass? If so, have a look around the date to dee if some of the numbers are double-struck. I would expect you to see some doubling towards the top and right of one or both of the 8's, and possibly the 1 depending on the version you have.

With a coin that worn, it's going to be difficult to see.
