I just picked up this 1882-S MS66 PL Morgan graded by NGC in an old holder and was thinking about submitting it to CAC. What are your thoughts? Think it would get the green bean?
Well, I have my thoughts on this but I'm not going to say anything right now. But I'll comment later.
The CAC coins do seem to bring a little more and there aren't many proof like CAC coins in this grade, so I thought it might be worth it.
It's a lovely coin, but I would say that it is at the lower end of 66 coins. I wouldn't expect that it would get the bean.
I'd just like to know how they justified grading it a 66 with such a large patch of hairlines across the cheek. It looks like the coin was wiped and thus should not be graded at all.
Oh Lord!! The "hairlines" are probably scratches on the slab. Also, in case one does not know, Morgans do get contact marks from other Morgans in mint bags. I see no hairlines on this coin. It is appropriately graded in my opinion.
I see what he's talking about...but they are not visible in all the photos. My guess is, they are on the case and not the coin. It'd be hard to tell for sure without seeing the coin in hand. I see them in pics 3 and 4 along the lower jaw and cheek. I do not see them at all in pics 1 and 2. I think the coin will CAC.
So you agree that this is not a "damaged" coin, and definitely a gem Morgan that has considerable eye appeal, and probably deserving of a CAC sticker, and appropriately graded? I was wondering if I needed a new prescription for my glasses.
Yes...that is what I think (not the part about the glasses). I think the marks Doug is seeing is either on the holder or being made to look much worse due to the lighting. If that was not the case, I would think they would be visible in all photos.
That was what I thought, and said. I think it is probably has hairline scratches on the holder, as many slabs get, particularly if they are in contact with other slabs. The glasses are another story--due for a prescription soon. lol
Of course they can. I wipe off my slabs occasionally, especially the older ones. However, I do use auto wax to take off the scratches.(before someone gets crazy about this--I polish the slabs lightly, not the coins).
It was pic #2 that convinced me that the hairlines are on the coin and not the slab. Obviously NGC didn't care, but I don't think there's any denying that the marks are on the coin and not the slab.
I am denying that. That coin has NO hairlines that are discernible from those photographs. If you see marks, they are typical Morgan contact marks. The photos are not that great in terms of contrast.
