1882 P Morgan Dollar Posible Proof?

Discussion in 'Coin Chat' started by Michael Bertono, Apr 5, 2023.

  1. I have a1882P Morgan that I purchased and was looking at it and thought it could possibly be a proof. Im no expert and i have a hard time identifying proof morgans that don't have a cameo or deep cameo appearance. I would be thankful for any help or tips on identifying proof morgans and your opinion on this coin. Thank you Screenshot_20230405_153648_eBay.jpg Screenshot_20230405_153635_eBay.jpg Screenshot_20230405_153617_eBay.jpg Screenshot_20230405_153606_eBay.jpg Screenshot_20230405_153554_eBay.jpg

    Hello Mike,
No expert here, as well. Given that 98% of this coin looks 'mark proof', would a proof have ended up w/ a deep gouge chin wise? Perhaps done post mintage?
So many questions I'm not able to address,
    but lovely Morgan either/or.

    The angled photos aren't readable.
It sure doesn't look proof with the heavily clashed dies. Remove some light and get straight on photos. There is a very heavy clash and can't tell which one it is. I have it boiled down, I believe to a VAM-29A or a 36A.

I doubt it is a proof, sorry.

  7. Thank you guys. The more time i take looking at proof morgans the less this coin looks like one. I've seen some really well struck morgans before but I've never really noticed others having such a flat well detailed rim before, which had me questioning if this was some type of impared proof. I really appreciate all the help and quick replies.

The coin is definitely NOT a proof. In fact, it is a normal business strike that is slightly circulated. I would grade it as AU 50. Nothing in the pictures makes it look even slightly like a proof.

To me an AU50 would have virtually no breast feathers left. This coin is much better than that.

Nope. It is low grade AU. Here is the relevant PCGS photo from Photograde.
