I think I have an 1882-O over S. I've never had an error coin.
When I look at the mintmark, I can see the curve of the S going under the O.

    What do you think!

I inherited the collection..so I can't really take credit for anything other than noticing the error in the mintmark. Without a strong magnifying glass, I can see how you could miss this detail.

Looks like VAM 3, best I can see the blowups. Check here, it is easier to tell with a loupe and the actual coin. It also has the other 1882 O/S listings on this site.

Great post! I'm pretty new to coin collecting. I've heard of VAMs, but knew almost nothing about them.

After checking coin with 20x loupe and your link to VAM's 3, 4 & 5...I'd say it's a VAM4. I can see the die marks on inside of ear, doubling of 2 in date on outside right loop. Diagonal crossing O in mintmark appears to be recessed.

I'll have this coin checked out by a more knowlegable expert, but without your post, I wouldn't have gotten this far...many thanks!

There are some that believe these VAMs are not OMMs and are actually caused by a die break which progressed during the dies' life.
