Hello all! I recently purchased an old collectors book with the coin included in the 1882 spot. At first thought I thought it was a 1883, not an 1883. Then I thought maybe a 1882. Then I looked in the Red Book and there is a '1883 over 2' option. Could this perhaps be that? Any guess on the grade? Thanks! I'm not sure offhand, but this may help. http://www.shieldnickels.net/1883_2/Varieties.html Edit: after a bit of looking, it is a filled 2 1882 and is considered very common and not an 1883/2 over date. You may want to give that one a bit of an acetone dip; the details are actually pretty strong XF ish, but the spotting makes it hard to really give a grade. Is that a scan by chance?
Hi Matt. Something definitely happened to the last digit on the date but I can't say because of the overall condition of the coin. Grade? Fair.
I'd say XF details environmental damage. This is an 1882 filled 2. I own one. An 1882 should have a closely spaced date. An 1883, as well as the 83/2, should have a widely spaced date.
Jeez you guys eyes are a lot better than mine. Guess I need my seeing eye dog to help me with grading.
I took a look at the larger pictures. I'm obviously way low on the grade. Last time I do that after driving 500 miles.
As others said, it's a filled 2, not an overdate. Very common. Here's more info: http://www.shieldnickels.net/1883_2/1882Filled2.html
Thanks for the input everyone! The links were super helpful... Alas a 83/2 would have been ideal but, not that lucky Also, thanks for the grading! The pics aren't the best - just taken with my cell phone through a microscope. An acetone dip won't hurt the coin? I generally avoid any type of cleaning because I don't want to risk damaging. Cheers - Matt
