i just received this coin today. it has some nice toning on the obverse. can anyone give this coin a grade for me. and do you think the toning would add value?? OBVERSE REVERSE another picture of the obverse. (with camera)
Right off the top of my head I would think that toning was purely artificial and that it would in fact lessen the value. As for grade - maybe 63 details.
I agree with Doug, MS-63ish and AT. Value is only what a collector of toned dollars is willing to pay. Maybe $30-$50. Ben
interesting, looks chemically treated, possibly with a sulfer based dandruff shampoo or sulfer jelly then wiped because....... it just looks oddball to me like AT coins do
MS63. I would agree the coin appears odd. I can tell there's some oxidation of the surface which lessens the eye appeal, but not the value. As for the toning? I reserve my opinion.
very odd toning. it is toned around the perimeter and just the high points of lady liberty. you be suspect to be AT, but other than that coin looks like it could grade 63 to 64.
It just looks like an end-roll toner to me. All of the toned areas would be the contact points on the end of the roll, right ? If the end of the roll were an open area, old timers wadded up tissue paper and taped it to the end to close off the roll from dust. It does appear to be sulphur based toning, but could it not be from the paper ?
Good thoughts Roto, yep, there is, or was, sulpher in tissue paper. That is some oddball toning tho, lol. I'd like to see Hobo's comments on this for sure.
i did win this item from an auction. it was described as end of roll toning. the toning was a bit diffrent from some of the other toned coins i have. i didnt think it was AT though. i appreciate all the input so far. its still a great coin though. the grade you guys gave it is quite good and would make it worth more than i had paid for it. so even if it is AT i am coming up ahead.:thumb:
Not necessarily, for if people think the coin is AT they would likely offer half or less what it would be worth otherwise.
My money is on AT. The toning does not look natural. The toning has sharp boundaries between colors instead of gradually changing from one color to the next. The toning looks like it was painted on; look at the tiara and LIBERTY - the same color is on the high points as well as the low point (like it was painted on). This looks to be the opposite of end-roll toning. The parts of the coin where the wrapper paper would be have little or no toning but the center of the coin (where there would have been no paper) is heavily toned. I guess tissue paper could be a possible explanation but I think that is a stretch.
