It looks like it's been buffed in that
    area.

Not FF damage - Post Minting Damage (PMD)

A feeder finger could not reach into the recesses of the die to make its' marks; feeder finger damage appears only on the fields of a coin.

Feed finger scrapes show up in the upper reverse fields for Morgans. This does look like a nasty bit of polishing from being stuck in a counting machine and being buffed by the feed wheel for a while, but some sort of strike-thru can't be ruled out from the pictures. There's a patch of something between Liberty's forelocks and the P, if these are hairlines in the coin, then this is PMD.

Edit: I just enlarged the picture. Those are hairlines in the field, so I'm going with PMD. Counting wheel, Dremel, something else capable of buffing a small area.

Hang in there. It's not easy seeing them get old.
