Pretty sure it is this coin: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/gtg-1881-s-morgan.297561/ It was in a 64 PCGS rattler with an ugly, hazy obverse. I think after the acetone, it is probably 65. I think if it was a 66, it may have been worth it - but this is probably capped at 65. I'm somewhat concerned about the spotty areas on the obverse - are they damaged from the gunk?
Definitely a good call cracking it out of the rattler. It's likely to grade 65, but even if it gets 64 or 64+, it's an easier sell than before. There are enough Morgans in rattlers out there that the number of buyers who will buy an ugly, common coin just because it's a rattler is minimal.
There was PVC residue all over the obverse, and I needed some stress relief from my statistics homework. So I cracked her out. I'm glad I did.
If the reside was PVC (as I suspect it probably was), there is a good chance the spots are actually damage. A dip won't fix that. It is hard to tell if that's what they are from the pictures. If it is damage from PVC, you're actually more likely to get UNC Details than a 65....
Still a little pvc behind the cap. I would leave in overnight again and if no effect dip in a mild ezest solution. Should clear the remaining pvc right up
Took your advice. The spots are gone now. EDIT: they showed up in the picture, but they are not noticable in hand.
I agree. Capped out at MS-65. Could be 64. But at $59, I did not overpay. I am really impressed with my iPad's camera.
$59.00 would certainly make that a much easier decision to make at cracking. It looks like it certainly helped quite a bit. Nice job.
He is right. Nice 64, but shy of a 65, due to some chatter. Nice strike, and good looking coin in general.
