1881-S Gold Eagle ~~ Grade Opinions

    Here is a circulated 1881-S Eagle. What grade would you put on the holder? It's definitely seen the bottom of a pocket of purse in the past but gold is a soft metal, so... :D

    With all those scratches and deep gouges I'd have to say XF-40 or 45.

    That's a real shame. I can see plenty of luster remaining around the edges of the fields. It looks like somebody dropped this coin in a tool box and carried it 100 miles in the back of a wagon on a washboard road.

    I can't go over vf-35, but thats just me and I don't grade a lot of gold

    I would say AU50 to 55. That is just looking at the book and the pictures - I really do not know anything about gold. But it looks nice.

    No, I don't think so, maybe something showing up on the plastic. Here is a little better pic, but the coin was purchased as circulated XFish from www.mintproducts.com
